The Accurate Dinosaur

Description

With the release of the new trailer for Disney/Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, this guy is very excited and thrilled. Of course, after I watched the trailer I had so many questions, both about the plot and the biota. But that's not why we're here.

Being apart of the Paleo-Community means I get to witness firsthand the rapidly changing world of paleontology as science reveals more about the prehistoric past. And that means many of our most beloved dinosaurs were a lot more different than we ever could've imagined (while still remaining endlessly fascinating and beautiful).

Pixar's decision to make the archosaurian characters of The Good Dinosaur so cartoony and very stereotypically designed was entirely intentional. And while I really have no problem with the final designs, many of us have felt that the dinosaurs could've remained in that wildly cutsey style while still being scientifically accurate. And so, here we are! I've remade Arlo and Butch into a more appropriate style. Arlo's lost his chunky head, elephantine legs, and four knees and has been fixed up to look more like a proper diplodocoid (all the while keeping his adorable smile). Butch, of course, has been given coelurosaurian proto-feathers and his head has been touched up to better match the actual skull shape.

Thankfully, it's been said that The Good Dinosaur will feature feathered dromaeosaurs (presumably based on Velociraptor) with odd hair-styles similar to those on football-players. So I've doodled one here too.

And also Sadness is here because she is an adorable cinnamon-roll too precious for this world.

Now, despite drawing these up, I am not in anyway shaming Pixar or the film in question. Like I said, I'm super excited and happy to know that I'll be seeing this movie very soon in the cinemas. I absolutely loved Inside Out and I know that this is going to be a great and unique film too. I just want to give to my Paleo-friends an alternate look at "what could've been". Hope you all enjoy this image! Let me know what you think...

Where'd you get the info on the feathered dromaeosaurids with "hairstyles"? I didn't hear anything about that while scowering through the interviews. Really psyched to hear that that's the case. :)
